Travel Sometimes

Continuing on from our tale of bad luck in Vega; upon leaving the Stratosphere casino, the weather had taken a turn for the worst. It had gone from blazing sunshine and heat, to dark rain filled clouds and high winds. We decided we had better make it back to our casino as quick as possible, but knew there was at least an hour thirty minutes of walking even if done briskly. Although being the tight as we were with money, we decided against a taxi and walked anyway.

Even with the strong winds, it still felt quite warm in our t-shirt and shorts. That was until the rain started. It came down thick and fast, and pretty cold too, so we ducked into the nearest casino to shelter. While we were here my mate thought he might as well have a flutter on the tables. We made our way around the various tables, until we came across a Blackjack table with a seat free. My mate sat down and began to play. A couple of hands later someone left, so I decided to have a go myself. As I began to sit down the dealer asked for my ID. Having kind of been expecting this (Only being 24 at this time), I handed him my UK driver’s licence. After staring at it somewhat bewildered, he called over the floor manager, who also looked a little confused as he examined my licence. I believe the problem was down to the difference between how America and the rest of the world display dates. Most of us show a date as day, month, and year. The Americans however show it as month, day, year, so to them my licence had me born on the 31st month, and thus not valid.

Now, you may not be aware, but in the Vegas casinos there is a distinct path marked on the carpets. Those not allowed to gamble (Under 21), are suppose to keep to this path. Unfortunately this particular casino did not have said path. As my I.D. was not acceptable to them, I was asked to leave the casino.

I waited outside with little cover from the downpour while my friend finished up, taking a little longer than perhaps was necessary. By the time we were set to go there was only light rain. We joined up with the two others we were travelling with, and drove back to Los Angles.
